LEISURE TRAIL RIDE PROGRAM

In Yuma we don’t have private forests or mountains full of trails as many trail rides offer, but we’ve found a lot of fun destination rides in our Wetlands parks, next to the Mexican border, along the Colorado River and in the desert. We currently have several saddles all the same size, 15”, which should fit riders under 160 pounds. Please wear comfortable pants, and only closed toe shoes or boots are permitted; no sandals. Maximum weight 220 lbs.

Our horses are north Idaho mountain horses. These horses are used to climbing, crossing rivers and bridges, and are not barn sour, i.e. they’re not wanting to run back to the barn. They are horses we use for trail riding in the mountains of northern Idaho. Most are senior and are happy to go out; not run back to the barn!

We offer trail rides around Yuma. The most popular even for new riders is in and/or across the Gila River know locally as Shit Creek (I have no idea why). The per person rate is $85. Singles are fine!

Riders will meet at the ranch, get fitted and tryout your horse, then use your vehicle to follow us to our trail start about 10 miles away for a river ride. Plan for 3 hours of time total with about 1 1/2 hrs. saddle time including an hour on the trail. Typically we start at 10 a.m.; rides are offered 7 days a week October-mid May. All rides are private for your group or single rider.  Riders should be able to steer left, right, stop and shorten their reins or a $15  review/lesson will be suggested. These leisure rides are not with follow along horses, and you don't have to stay in a single file. So far all happy customers!

Don’t forget your camera! Be sure you have a charged battery and lots of room for pictures and videos. I often take pictures for you an will send them after you post a review. We do ask that you not use your cell phone for conversation or texting on the ride.

We’ll finish our ride at the trailer where you can leave us. We will take care of getting the horses home, untacked and cleaned up. Of course, you’re welcome to help!  A non-refundable 50% deposit for your space on the ride is due when you make your reservation; the balance is due prior to mounting your horse on the day of the ride. There is a $20 rescheduling fee for changed appointments.

DESTINATION RIDES:   Some ride options are listed in alphabetical order. We suggest the Shit Creek ride for your first ride with us. If the river is too high for the loop, we will just cross it for just as much fun. The East Wetlands is a nice alternative.

California  Border Ride - We'll enter California and head south toward Algodones to park. Our ride southbound will have the Colorado River on our left. We will ride right up to the border fence. Additional $10 trailering fee due to time and distance.

Celery Ride - Named for the fields of celery that we passed when we found this ride. It's located west of West Wetlands. Very flat ride.

Colorado River - Ride your horse in the Colorado River. Be prepared to get wet!  Warm weather and warm water makes this ride fun. This ride begins as the Shit Creek ride. Instead of continuing through the brush, we will go deeper into the Colorado and spend our time there. Bareback/saddle pad only. Experienced riders.

East Wetlands - Ride under the historic Oceans to Oceans bridge then continue along the Colorado River where the revitilization plan has replanted much of the vegetation. Very scenic! Lots of trees for shade.

Moonlight Rides - When the moon is full enough and high enough, we'll take you into the desert for some moonshadow riding. Trailering optional

Morelos Dam - Enjoy a great view of the end of the U.S. portion of the Colorado River. Ride among tall vegetation.

Pet Cemetery  - Pass through the pet cemetery on your ride to the Mexican border fence. $10 trailering fee due to time and distance

Picacho State Park - Ride through the fabulous gorges. The drive can take an hour or more one way. $100 trailering fee (subject to change). Travel is on a very bumpy, dusty, long road. Ride in the gravely wash. Experienced riders only, please.

Shit Creek (local name) - Most Popular! With some hills up and down, this trail crosses the river several times and is lined with brush that leads to the confluence of the Colorado and Gila Rivers. A portion of the ride follows the last loop of the Gila River if the water is not too high. Lots of riders like to get their feet wet; we'll discuss it before we go. Splashing around in the shallows is sometimes an option when it's warm.

Skeleton Ride - Ride in Somerton along an irrigation ditch, through sand hills and citrus trees. We once found a horse skeleton on this ride.

West Wetlands - Ride over the fancy Bridge to Nowhere, along the Colorado River waking trail and enjoy the revitilization planting efforts. Sometimes it's warm enough to play in the sprinklers if our timing is right.

Let us know if there's somewhere else you'd like to go. We can check it out and price it for you. We have more rides when you've gone on all of the above!
